Restoring Mobility, Dignity, and Hope to Texans

The Texas State Council First Lady’s Project, “Wheelchairs for Texas”, in partnership with the American Wheelchair Mission, is committed to helping every Diocese bring wheelchairs to their Diocese.  Wheelchairs for Texas will provide wheelchairs to children, adults, veterans, and seniors who lack mobility and cannot afford a wheelchair.

A special QR code will allow every dollar donated to the First Ladies Wheelchairs for Texas, to purchase wheelchairs that are delivered to the Diocese and distributed per the Bishop’s direction to those in need within the Diocese.

Since 2003, the Knights of Columbus and American Wheelchair Mission have helped deliver more than 150,000 wheelchairs worldwide, transforming lives through the gift of mobility and independence.

    Our Texas Goal

For the 2026–2027 fraternal year, Texas Knights are working toward an ambitious goal of sponsoring 15,000 wheelchairs, representing $2.25 million in charitable donations. Every contribution directly impacts someone in need:

    • $150 provides one wheelchair
    • $1,500 provides 10 wheelchairs
    • $16,500 provides 110 wheelchairs
    • $42,000 provides 280 wheelchairs (a full container – – when a diocese reaches a full container – – that container will be ordered for the diocese.

    Why Wheelchair Sunday Matters

The most successful fundraising tool available to councils is Wheelchair Sunday. These parish-wide events allow parishioners to learn about the mission, participate in a meaningful charitable effort, and directly help individuals regain mobility and independence.

Texas results show that councils using a pulpit announcement dramatically increase participation. Events that included a pulpit presentation averaged approximately $26,291, while events without one averaged approximately $6,343—more than four times the amount raised.

    How Leaders Can Help

    Diocesan Deputies

    • Promote the program throughout the diocese.
    • Establish diocesan goals and track progress.
    • Encourage participation in every district.

    District Deputies

    • Help councils secure pastor approval.
    • Encourage at least three Wheelchair Sundays in every district.
    • Support councils with planning, promotion, and resources.

    Grand Knights and Councils

    • Budget at least $150 to sponsor one wheelchair.
    • Schedule and promote a Wheelchair Sunday.
    • Utilize bulletin notices, social media, parish websites, and pulpit announcements.
    • Make the program a regular agenda item at council meetings.

    Make a Lasting Difference

A wheelchair is more than equipment—it restores freedom, dignity, opportunity, and hope. Every council can make an impact by supporting the First Lady’s Project, hosting a Wheelchair Sunday, and encouraging parishioners to participate. Together, Texas Knights can help deliver 15,000 wheelchairs and change thousands of lives.
